Gennadiy Golovkin is still on a mission to secure a trilogy fight against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Snagging some middleweight hardware should help his cause. "GGG" returns to the ring Saturday, Oct. 5, when he faces Sergiy Derevyanchenko for the vacant IBF middleweight title at Madison Square Garden in New York City and live and exclusively on DAZN. That's the same IBF strap that?Alvarez had to vacate?when his camp couldn't come to an agreement with mandatory challenger Derevyanchenko on a purse bid for a potential clash.
That and trying to land a subsequent crack at Canelo should be more than enough incentive for Golovkin in this fight. GGG is coming off a dazzling fourth-round KO of Steve Rolls this past June, also at The Garden. Prior to that, the Kazakh warrior lost a majority decision to Canelo in a September 2018 bout that he thought he did enough to win.?
Will the former unified world middleweight champion score another emphatic victory and close in on the Canelo trilogy that he craves?

Golovkin vs. Derevyanchenko takes places at Madison Square Garden,?“The World’s Most Famous Arena” and the “Mecca of Boxing.” The iconic venue played host to?the iconic “Fight of the Century” on March 8, 1971, when Joe Frazier scored a unanimous decision win over Muhammad Ali, handing “The Greatest” his first-ever loss.
It was also the scene for notable fights such as Joe Louis vs. Rocky Marciano in October 1951 and Evander Holyfield vs. Lennox Lewis in March 1999. Who is Gennadiy Golovkin?
Gennadiy Golovkin is a former unified world middleweight champion, who was the long-time boogeyman of the division, dominating 160-pound boxers with his relentless, forward-fighting style.
The 2004 Olympic gold medalist, representing Kazakhstan, has etched a record of 39-1-1, although the sole loss and draw against Canelo remain controversial. Most boxing pundits thought GGG defeated Alvarez comfortably back in September 2017, but judge Adalaide Byrd's outrageous scorecard of 118-110 paved the way for their initial meeting to end in a draw.
Some critics?and fans alike also thought that Golovkin did enough to have his hand raised in their rematch last September, but Canelo switching up his strategy and walking down his rival gave him the majority decision and the WBA (Super) and WBC middleweight world titles.
Prior to his last bout against Steve Rolls in June, Golovkin, 37, replaced longtime trainer Abel Sanchez with Johnathon Banks and the new pairing delivered that fourth-round KO.

Who is Sergiy Derevyanchenko?
Sergiy Derevyanchenko is a rugged former world title challenger, having come up short in a split-decision loss to Daniel Jacobs for the IBF title at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden last October. That was his first pro loss.
After the 33-year-old Ukrainian took Jacobs the distance, he scored a unanimous decision over Jack Culcay in April, improving his record to 13-1 with 10 KOs. After Canelo defeated Jacobs to become the IBF titleholder, Derevyanchenko emerged as the mandatory challenger for the strap. However, Canelo's failure to come to terms with Derevyanchenko led to the title being vacated and this crack at GGG.
